How to get ready for a fair - Manchester Print Fair

So I’m going to be at the Manchester Print Fair on Saturday 11th May.

The Manchester Print Fair is in the beautiful cathedral in Manchester, just near Selfridges and Harvey Nichols.

I’m so pleased to get accepted to exhibit and I can’t wait to see all the other stall holders work. I’m hoping to see a few familiar faces.

There is always a lot of planning to do before an event and I’ve now got a check list I created to make sure I don’t forget anything. There is so much advice online these days for getting ready for events  and fairs. One of my favourite resources for all things creative business wise is The Design Trust - and there is an excellent article here  that I highly recommend to you.

Here’s the top 10 things I make always  sure I’ve got sorted.

1. Plan your display
Every event is different so making sure you’ve tried and tested out how your display will look before you go will make set up when you get there so much easier. If it’s a table top event - I will test out a few idea…

Creative Business Interview - Claire Lowe - Jewellery Designer

I’m so excited to start my Creative Business Interviews with jewellery designer Claire Lowe. Claire makes beautiful work using shape and colour with silver and resins and I caught up with her to find out more about how it all began and how she’s developed her creative business.

Tell us a bit about your business - what do you do?  Why did you decide to set up your creative business?
I’m a contemporary jewellery designer maker, I work with silver and resin which is a type of plastic. I studied Silversmithing, jewellery and allied crafts at Sir John Cass in Whitechapel London, I graduated in 2005. After graduating I applied for a few shows and started forming a collection of jewellery, my business started there. Its evolved and grown and my jewellery has progressed and developed in the years since I left university.

What is your typical work day like?
Every day is different, I have 3 children and my youngest isn’t at school yet. Everyday I try and post on Instagram and have a little time s…

Super Duper Lovely Day

What a lovely day the Open Studio event was yesterday in Leek. If you made it along then a big thank you for visiting. It was great to see so many people in the shop and studio.

We started the day taking down the brown paper from the shop front and although our signage is not yet sorted - I don’t think we did too bad a job of making a pop up shop for the day.

We even had a shop cat in the window ready to welcome everyone ...

It was a busy day and good to be part of the event in the town. Having spoken to some of the other studios taking part last night - it seems that we all had lots of visitors and everyone is keen to see the event grow each year. This was my first year of taking part - the Leek Open Studios is only in its third year, so it was exciting to hear that everyone had been busy.

There was a lot of fun had with the moustache selfie I’d painted onto the shop window....

I love you all for interacting with this because it really has given me such a fabulous set of happy photos…

Do you want to know more about setting up a creative business?

Very excited to announce a new series of blog posts I’ve got coming up - I’m a bit of a geek when it comes to creative business stuff - it combines all my past and current work of being in the corporate business world of sales and marketing before I got hooked into making and started my own creative venture.

So I’ve been in touch with some of my favourite makers to ask them about their creative businesses. They have all very kindly said yes to getting involved with my blog! And every month I’ll be featuring one of them on here and you’ll get to hear all about their journey plus some very handy tips and business advice.  Keep your eyes peeled - first one will be published in a few days.

Ooo - don’t forget it’s my Open Studio this Saturday 4th May - at 6 Leonard Street in Leek, Staffordshire. Open 10am - 4pm .
